Between Dreams and Reality

There was complete silence on the ride home. None of us had dared speak once the Witches had disappeared, not even Ginevra, though she had read every thought of mine—I could see that from her shocked expression.

The last piece of the puzzle had finally fallen into place. While my daytime torment was thanks to the Subterranean we were holding captive, at night it had been the Witches torturing me. I’d finally discovered the reason behind everything: I was destined to become a Witch. The thought should have terrified me, but instead the only thing I could think about was Evan and the possibility he was still alive. I would think about everything else later. It was only when we got home that the tension sought escape through my lips, as though the kitchen light had forever banished the darkness and awakened us all from a strange nightmare.

“Gwen?” I shot her a piercing look that demanded her full attention.

“I know what you’re about to ask. Forget it.” Her answer was as sharp as her crystal-green eyes. It was unexpectedly hurtful. I took in the pain and just as unexpectedly felt it burst inside me, ruled by a savage force. A dark force.

“What’s happening, ladies? We’re all in shock. I don’t think it’s the time for us to be fighting among ourselves.” Simon’s face was wan, showing he hadn’t yet recovered from the experience we’d just had. He didn’t realize what conclusion I had come to either.

“It’s an insane idea!” Ginevra railed at me, ignoring him. Her growing anger was intertwined with frustration, like a vine creeping around a tree, hard to eradicate.

Dreams hide many secrets. The Witch’s voice continued to whirl through my head, confirming the terrible truth that part of me must have always known.

“I . . . I still can’t believe it. My nightmares. They kept haunting me and they were real, weren’t they? I dreamed of them. I’ve always dreamed of them! They were torturing him,” I murmured, trying to follow the stream of thoughts flowing through my head. It was a reverse journey in which everything took shape, finally acquiring meaning.

“The nightmares were nothing but their attempts to turn you toward evil.”

I looked at Ginevra, my eyes fiery, and the determination on my face made her cringe. “But that’s not all, is it? You knew.” I wanted to shout into her face all the pain inside me, but all that came from my lips was a feeble sound. My doubts and fears had given way to certainty. Like a star exploding in the night, the future I’d been unable to see, blinded as I was by a dark cloud of pain, suddenly sparkled with a thousand colors. The sun had begun to shine again.

The thought that Evan was out there somewhere, still alive, banished the fear of what I was becoming. I would bring him back, even if it meant sacrificing everything, if I could just see him again one last time. In the blink of an eye, the warmth that flooded my heart melted away all the tension I’d accumulated.
